Kidd Leaves Opening Day PG Decision Uncertain After Flagg’s Debut

UPDATE: Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has praised rookie Cooper Flagg for his performance as starting point guard, but he remains noncommittal about keeping the 18-year-old in that role for the season opener. Following the Mavericks’ emphatic 121-94 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at T-Mobile Arena on October 25, 2023, Kidd stated, “There’s a lot of good, positive stories here, and we have some time to make a decision.”
Flagg transitioned to point guard after starting the first two preseason games at forward, the position he played at Duke. In his two starts at point guard, he averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while sharing the court with notable players like Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis.
Kidd highlighted Flagg’s adaptability, saying, “He’s done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team.” However, Kidd pointed out early offensive struggles during Wednesday’s game, where the Mavericks fell behind 22-10 before Flagg was substituted out midway through the first quarter. Concerns arose over the lineup’s spacing and shooting, as the starters managed only 3-of-15 from beyond the arc.
Flagg acknowledged his own challenges, stating, “I made some mental lapses today… Just got to stay more attached [defensively].” His early struggles were particularly evident while defending Lakers’ guard Gabe Vincent, who scored 18 points and hit five 3-pointers in the first few minutes.
Kidd emphasized the learning curve for Flagg, noting, “No matter if you’re 6-4, 6-2, or 6-8, when you’re in a pick-and-roll against guys who know how to run it, it’s hard.” He expressed confidence in Flagg’s competitiveness and ability to adapt, saying he will improve as he gains more experience.
As the Mavericks prepare for their season opener, all eyes will be on Kidd’s final decision regarding Flagg’s role. The urgency builds as the team looks to solidify its starting lineup, with the season fast approaching. Fans and analysts alike will be monitoring this situation closely, eager for updates as the Mavericks finalize their strategy.
Stay tuned for more developments as the Mavericks get ready for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
