Josh Naylor Signs 5-Year Deal with Mariners, Reunites in Seattle
UPDATE: First baseman Josh Naylor has officially signed a five-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, sources confirmed to ESPN. This urgent development marks a significant moment for the Mariners as they prioritize bolstering their lineup for the upcoming season.
Naylor, 28, reunites with the team that acquired him at the trade deadline and made re-signing him their top offseason goal. His impact in Seattle was immediate, showcasing his skills both offensively and defensively. The deal, pending a physical, is the first major signing in baseball’s offseason.
This contract adds Naylor to a formidable Mariners core that includes AL MVP runner-up Cal Raleigh and star center fielder Julio Rodriguez. The Mariners are gearing up for a strong push to reach their first-ever World Series after a thrilling run to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series last season.
In just 54 games with the Mariners, Naylor batted an impressive .299/.341/.490, hitting nine home runs, driving in 33 RBIs, and stealing 19 bases without being caught. His contributions not only solidified the first base position but also played a crucial role in the Mariners winning their first division title since 2001. In the postseason, he further excelled, hitting .340 with three home runs in 12 games.
Naylor’s aggressive style on the basepaths was particularly notable. Despite being one of the slowest runners in the league, he stole 30 out of 32 bases this season, showcasing his strategic prowess. This blend of speed and skill made him a standout player, even as teams adjusted to his tactics.
Originally drafted in the first round as the 12th overall pick by the Miami Marlins in 2015, Naylor has built an impressive career. Over his seven years in the league, he has accumulated 104 home runs, 435 RBIs, and 55 steals, and has participated in four postseasons. His performance last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks included 31 home runs and an All-Star appearance.
As Naylor returns to Seattle, he not only brings his talent but also the potential to inspire a younger generation, especially as he comes from a family of baseball players. His brothers, Bo Naylor and Myles Naylor, are both making their mark in the league, with Bo currently with the Cleveland Guardians and Myles in the Athletics’ system.
The Mariners aim to leverage Naylor’s skills to maintain momentum and build on last year’s success. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as this offseason unfolds.
