Jaden Ivey Undergoes Knee Surgery, Out for Four Weeks

BREAKING: The Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey will be sidelined for the next four weeks after undergoing surgery on his right knee, the team confirmed today. This setback complicates his anticipated return following a challenging previous season where he missed the final 49 games due to a left fibula injury.
Ivey’s discomfort arose after just one preseason game, prompting the Pistons to take immediate action. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff revealed that the injury was not linked to a specific incident but was a developing concern that became apparent during training camp.
“We took precautions, and then the medical team did their assessments and those things, and then had to make the decision that ultimately led us to where we are today,”
Bickerstaff stated before the Pistons’ last preseason game against the Washington Wizards.
The 2022 fifth overall draft pick was enjoying a breakout season last year before colliding with Cole Anthony of the Orlando Magic on New Year’s Day. During that season, he averaged an impressive 17.6 points per game and shot 41 percent from three-point range—both career highs.
To compensate for Ivey’s absence, the Pistons have acquired veteran guard Dennis Schroder as a backup point guard. Bickerstaff is optimistic about the potential of guards Marcus Sasser and two-way player Daniss Jenkins to step up during this crucial period. Additionally, Ausar Thompson is set to take on increased responsibility as a primary facilitator when All-NBA guard Cade Cunningham is off the court.
As Ivey recovers, he faces a timeline that could stretch to 10 months before returning to regular-season action. The Pistons are also weighing a rookie-scale extension for Ivey, pending an agreement before the October 20, 2023 deadline.
Bickerstaff emphasized the importance of a careful recovery process, stating,
“Our priority is to do what’s right by our guys, and never put them in a position where we feel like we have to rush them back.”
He acknowledged the mental and physical toll that injuries can take, particularly for one of the league’s fastest players.
As developments unfold, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely how the Pistons adapt to Ivey’s absence and what this means for their performance in the upcoming season.
