Holiday Shopping Frenzy Begins: Experts Warn of Stress Triggers
UPDATE: The holiday shopping rush has officially kicked off, with shoppers forming long lines outside of Target in River Park, Fresno early this morning. As consumers hunt for the best deals on popular items like AirPods and Beats headphones, experts are issuing urgent warnings about increased stress levels during this festive season.
A recent study from the American Psychiatric Association reveals that last year, an alarming 28% of Americans reported heightened holiday-related stress. As shoppers prepare for gatherings filled with family dynamics and financial pressures, licensed Family and Marriage Therapist Coraline Robinson from Balance Treatment Center emphasizes the importance of mental health during this time.
“This can be a period of overwhelming expectations,” Robinson stated. “When we set high goals, the potential for disappointment increases significantly.” With shopping, family gatherings, and grief weighing heavily on many, managing stress is crucial.
Robinson offers immediate strategies to cope with the holiday hustle. “Setting boundaries is key. Taking a few moments for deep breaths or finding a quiet space can make a difference,” she advises. Additionally, engaging in physical activity can significantly alleviate tension before attending social events. “Exercise can help calm your nervous system, preparing you to enjoy time with loved ones,” Robinson added.
As the holiday season intensifies, Robinson cautions against the common pitfalls of excessive spending and unhealthy habits. She encourages consumers to remain mindful of their alcohol and sugar intake, which can exacerbate stress levels. “With the surge of marketing and promotions, it’s easy to feel pressured. Consider taking a break from shopping—immerse yourself in an audiobook or podcast instead,” she suggests.
This holiday season, experts urge individuals to prioritize their mental well-being. Allowing yourself grace and stepping back from the chaos can foster a more joyful experience.
As holiday shopping continues to ramp up, the stressors linked to gift buying and family dynamics remain relevant. Stay tuned for more updates on how to navigate the season with care and mindfulness. For live updates, follow news anchor Ana Torrea on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
