Family Expands Dream Home After Welcoming First Child
BREAKING: A family in Hillsdale, New York, has just announced their remarkable journey of building their dream home, adapting it to their growing needs—especially after welcoming their first child.
Dimitri Brand and Nelly Mecklenburg, both 36, initially sought permanence after years of moving across cities like New Haven, Philadelphia, and Cambridge. In 2019, they purchased a 10-acre lot for $32,000, marking the start of their ambitious project.
The couple’s first construction was a 100-square-foot platform with translucent polycarbonate sliding doors, allowing them to experience the land’s seasonal beauty. As they deepened their connection to the site, they planned their future home, laying down the groundwork for essential utilities.
In Spring 2021, they broke ground on their compact house, which features a 475-square-foot basement office and a 450-square-foot living space. Brand utilized local materials, including hemlock siding and oak flooring sourced from trees cleared for construction.
By Spring 2023, the couple had completed their house just in time for their wedding. However, with the arrival of their son, they realized they needed more space. They began an expansion project, adding an 850-square-foot extension to accommodate their growing family. Initially using only 200 square feet of the new space, they transformed their previous kitchenette into a full-size kitchen, perfect for family gatherings.
Mecklenburg shared their philosophy: “It’s about being adaptable,” emphasizing their commitment to flexibility in design. The couple has managed to keep construction costs to approximately $325,000 by relying on their own skills and the help of friends.
This evolving home reflects their life stages, from a cozy couple’s retreat to a family-oriented environment. As they continue to grow, Brand and Mecklenburg plan to leave parts of the new addition unfinished, allowing for future expansions tailored to their needs.
This compelling story highlights how determination and creativity can turn dreams into reality, resonating with families everywhere looking to create lasting homes. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey and the innovations they bring to home building.
