Experts Urge Parents to Act Now to Boost Baby’s Mood
URGENT UPDATE: Parenting experts are warning that understanding and addressing a baby’s mood is crucial for both emotional well-being and development. New insights shared by experts like Jordyn Koveleski Gorman, founder of Eat Play Say, highlight that babies experience rapid mood changes influenced by various factors, including sleep, hunger, and overstimulation.
Just announced, these findings underscore the importance of recognizing that babies can feel overwhelmed, especially as they learn new skills like crawling and walking. “Their brains and bodies are working overtime, which can lead to fussiness,” Gorman explained in an exclusive interview with Newsweek. Parents need to be vigilant about their baby’s needs and emotions to foster a nurturing environment.
To effectively soothe a fussy baby, experts recommend several immediate techniques. Marilyn Cross Coleman, a perinatal mental health specialist, emphasizes the calming effects of rhythmic movements, which mimic the comforting environment of the womb. “Swaddling and cuddling while rocking or bouncing can significantly calm a baby’s brain,” Coleman stated.
In addition, skin-to-skin contact is crucial. “Holding a baby against bare skin releases oxytocin—the bonding hormone—benefiting both baby and caregiver,” Coleman noted. This method not only calms the baby but also strengthens the parent-child bond.
However, parents should be aware of signs that indicate the need for more than just soothing techniques. Gorman warns that if crying is intense, lasts for hours, or persists despite meeting all basic needs, it could signify underlying issues such as reflux or illness. “If your baby calms with feeding or rocking, that’s normal,” she clarified.
During the developmental stage known as “the crying curve,” which peaks between 6 to 8 weeks, many parents seek mental health support as the stress can be overwhelming. Coleman reassures parents that this phase is typical and not a reflection of their parenting skills. “It’s essential to understand that you’re doing nothing wrong,” she said.
If crying persists, parents are advised to look for unusual symptoms like lethargy, fever, or changes in diaper habits, which may indicate serious distress. Coleman encourages parents to trust their instincts and consult medical professionals when in doubt. “If something feels off, always reach out to a healthcare provider,” she added.
Additionally, parental emotional regulation is vital. Gorman highlights that parents’ anxiety can directly impact their baby’s mood. “Taking slow, deep breaths or stepping outside for a moment can reset your emotional state,” she advised. Engaging in self-regulation not only benefits the parent but also teaches the baby how to manage emotions effectively.
As parents navigate these challenging moments, Coleman stresses the importance of modeling calm behavior. “Even in tough times, showing your baby what self-regulation looks like is one of the greatest gifts you can give them,” she concluded.
With these urgent insights, parents are encouraged to implement these simple yet effective strategies to enhance their baby’s mood and foster a nurturing environment. This guidance is especially relevant as families continue to adapt to the challenges of raising infants in a fast-paced world.
