Dog Accidentally Shoots Owner in Pennsylvania, Investigation Launched
UPDATE: A man in Shillington, Pennsylvania was rushed to the hospital after being accidentally shot in the back by his dog in a bizarre incident late Tuesday night. The shooting occurred at approximately 11:13 PM when the man, aged 53, left his shotgun on his bed while cleaning it, according to the Shillington Police Department.
Authorities report that the man was alone with his son in the home when the dog jumped on the bed, inadvertently pulling the trigger of the shotgun. Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of State Street and found the man with a serious back wound. He was immediately taken to a local hospital for surgery.
Corporal Michael Schoone of the Shillington Police confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation aims to clarify whether the dog’s paw accidentally engaged the trigger or if there was a malfunction with the firearm. A spent shell casing was located inside the shotgun, sparking a reminder from police about essential gun safety measures.
“This incident represents a ‘perfect storm’ of factors,” Schoone stated. “It was just the right place at the right time, or the wrong time.” He emphasized the importance of adhering to the “cardinal rules” of gun safety, urging all licensed gun owners to keep firearms pointed in a safe direction and away from triggers.
The man’s current condition remains unclear as he recovers from surgery. Two other dogs were also present in the home during the incident, but no additional injuries were reported.
This shocking event serves as a critical reminder of the potential dangers associated with firearms in homes. As the investigation continues, police urge all gun owners to practice extreme caution and prioritize safety measures to prevent similar accidents.
