Devils Defeat Kings 4-1, Halonen Scores First NHL Goal
UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the New Jersey Devils triumphed over the Los Angeles Kings with a decisive 4-1 victory on October 28, 2023, ending the Kings’ impressive points streak. The game showcased a remarkable performance from Brian Halonen, who netted his first NHL goal, while Dawson Mercer shined by scoring two short-handed goals in a game that was nothing short of exhilarating.
Just moments into the third period, Mercer seized the momentum, scoring during a Kings power play to register his team-leading seventh goal of the season. He later secured his two-goal game with an empty-net shot from deep in the New Jersey zone, putting the game out of reach with 3:48 left on the clock. This victory marks a critical bounce-back effort for the Devils after suffering two losses and conceding a staggering 13 goals in their previous outings.
Celebrating his two-year contract extension, Jacob Markstrom delivered an outstanding performance with 42 saves, showcasing his resilience after a challenging return from injury. The 35-year-old netminder was significantly sharper than in his last outing, where he allowed eight goals against Colorado. His efforts were pivotal in ensuring a strong defensive display for the Devils.
In a moment of pride for the Devils, Halonen, who had struggled to find his footing in previous seasons, finally broke through in his 12th NHL appearance. The 26-year-old, who went undrafted, capitalized on a short-angle shot, adding to the excitement of the night. Meanwhile, Nico Hischier ended his seven-game goal drought with a first-period tip-in of a shot from Luke Hughes, marking his third goal of the season.
Despite the loss, the Kings remained competitive, with Andrei Kuzmenko scoring midway through the third period to momentarily disrupt Markstrom’s bid for his 25th career shutout. Darcy Kuemper faced 18 shots but was unable to prevent the Kings from falling short after recording points in seven consecutive games.
Looking ahead, the Kings will face the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday at Crypto.com Arena, where they will seek to rebound from this defeat. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on both teams to see how they adapt following this significant matchup.
Stay tuned for more updates as the NHL season unfolds, and be sure to share this breaking news with fellow hockey fans!
