Death Toll Surges Past 120 as Cyclone Ravages Sri Lanka
UPDATE: The death toll from Cyclone Ditwah has tragically surpassed 120, with urgent rescue demands overwhelming Sri Lanka as the cyclone continues to batter the island nation. Floodwaters have submerged significant areas, leaving many residents stranded and in desperate need of assistance.
Dozens of passengers found themselves perched on the roof of a house in a central region, approximately 100 miles north of Colombo, after floodwaters engulfed the bus they were traveling in. In the eastern part of the country, nearly 100 students remain trapped in hostels, facing a critical shortage of food and water as the floodwaters rise around them.
Rescue operations are struggling to keep pace with the catastrophic flooding affecting the nation of 23 million. The Disaster Management Center reported early Saturday that an additional 130 people are missing, compounding the already devastating loss of life. Many local officials fear the final death toll could be much higher, particularly in the central district of Badulla, which has reported almost 50 deaths and 41 missing individuals.
The cyclone’s impact has been felt across half of Sri Lanka’s 25 districts, with significant damage to transport and telecommunications hampering rescue efforts. Families, including children and the elderly, are trapped on the upper floors of buildings, unable to escape the rising waters. The severity of this natural disaster adds to the ongoing challenges faced by a nation still recovering from a protracted civil war and a recent economic crisis.
As the situation develops, the need for immediate support and resources is more critical than ever. Authorities are urging anyone who can assist to step forward, highlighting the urgent need for shelter and supplies for the countless individuals affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
Stay tuned for further updates as rescue efforts continue and the situation evolves.
