David St. Pierre Nominated as Maine’s Next U.S. Marshal
UPDATE: Former Lewiston Police Chief David St. Pierre is set to be named Maine’s next U.S. Marshal, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. This significant announcement comes just one month after St. Pierre’s retirement and highlights his exemplary leadership during the tragic mass shooting in October 2023.
St. Pierre’s nomination underscores his proven track record of service, particularly noted for his “steady leadership” during one of the most challenging times in Maine’s recent history. “His professionalism and composure during the deadliest shooting in Maine’s history demonstrated a deep commitment to public safety,” Collins stated, emphasizing St. Pierre’s extensive law enforcement experience spanning over three decades.
If confirmed by the Senate, St. Pierre will succeed Kevin Neal, who held the U.S. Marshal position since 2022 before relocating to a similar role in Massachusetts. St. Pierre will oversee critical responsibilities, including apprehending fugitives, managing federal prisoners, and running the Witness Protection Program, which are essential to maintaining public safety in Maine.
St. Pierre began his career with the Lewiston Police Department in the summer of 1992, rising through the ranks to become chief in 2021. Throughout his tenure, he has garnered vast experience in criminal investigations and interagency coordination. His leadership was especially pivotal during the mass shooting response, where he coordinated hundreds of local, state, and federal officers to ensure public safety.
“Chief St. Pierre played a central leadership role in coordinating the response to the tragic events of 2023,” Collins added. His role was vital as the community dealt with the aftermath of the shooting, making him a prominent figure in local law enforcement.
In addition to his leadership during crises, St. Pierre was instrumental in the planning and transition to a new public safety facility in Lewiston, uniting multiple law enforcement agencies under one roof. His commitment to collaboration and public service has set a high standard in Maine’s law enforcement community.
St. Pierre is a notable graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and remains an active member of the FBI National Academy Associates. He also holds memberships in the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, showcasing his dedication to continuous professional development.
Lewiston’s Mayor Carl Sheline expressed pride in St. Pierre’s nomination, stating, “We definitely miss him, but I couldn’t be happier for him.” This sentiment reflects the strong community support for St. Pierre as he prepares to take on this significant federal role.
As the confirmation process unfolds, many in Maine are eager to see how St. Pierre will apply his extensive experience to address the challenges facing the U.S. Marshal’s office. With his proven leadership skills and deep-rooted commitment to public service, St. Pierre is poised to make a significant impact in his new role.
