Cal Faces No. 21 SMU Tonight in Post-Wilcox Era Showdown
UPDATE: In a crucial matchup, the Cal Bears host the No. 21 SMU Mustangs today at 5 p.m. (PST) at Memorial Stadium. This game marks the beginning of a new era for Cal, following the firing of head coach Justin Wilcox just a week ago after a disappointing 31-10 defeat to Stanford.
Interim head coach Nick Rolovich takes the reins, aiming to reverse the Bears’ fortunes against a formidable SMU squad. Rolovich, who previously served as senior offensive analyst, has expressed interest in remaining on the coaching staff, regardless of future hires.
For Cal, the stakes are high. Freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is just 117 passing yards shy of surpassing NFL star Aaron Rodgers for the No. 10 spot on Cal’s single-season passing list, with 2,787 yards so far this season. Senior defensive lineman Aidan Keanaaina has been a standout with 49 tackles, the highest for a Cal defensive lineman since 2019.
On the other side, the Mustangs are riding a wave of momentum, having won six of their last seven games. Currently ranked No. 21 in the College Football Playoff standings, SMU clinches a spot in the ACC championship game with a victory today. Quarterback Kevin Jennings leads the Mustangs with 3,113 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, bringing experience and skill to the field.
Statistically, this game is packed with intrigue. Cal’s wide receiver Jacob De Jesus has recorded 87 receptions, ranking third nationally. He needs just 14 catches in the final two games to break the program’s single-season record. Meanwhile, SMU boasts the top national ranking in both interceptions (17) and fumble recoveries (10), totaling 27 takeaways this season.
As kickoff approaches, all eyes will be on how the Bears respond to their coaching change and whether they can upset the Mustangs. Fans are eager to see if Rolovich can ignite a spark in the team, while SMU aims to maintain their championship aspirations.
