Broadview Zoning Board Rejects ICE Expansion Proposal Amid Outcry
UPDATE: The Village of Broadview’s Zoning Board of Appeals has just rejected a controversial proposal aimed at limiting the expansion of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) properties. This decisive move occurred during a heated meeting on October 19, 2023, where community members expressed deep concerns about the implications of the ordinance.
The proposal, put forth by Broadview Building Commissioner and Economic Director David Upshaw, sought to impose strict criteria on ICE’s property expansions. It mandated that detention centers must secure special use permits and remain at least 1,000 feet away from residential areas, schools, daycares, and other sensitive locations. However, despite these restrictions, many residents voiced skepticism, fearing that it would inadvertently allow ICE to establish a stronger foothold in Broadview.
During the public comment period, approximately 20 residents voiced their opposition, highlighting the proposal’s ambiguity and lack of clarity. “Yes, the ordinance places restrictions,” stated resident Allisan Galvan, “but it does not prohibit private prisons or detention centers outright.” This sentiment resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom were concerned about the potential for increased ICE operations in their community.
Another resident, Janelle Miller, criticized the village government for its lack of transparency surrounding the proposal. “We have to be part of the process and, at this point, I do not feel part of the process,” Miller remarked, urging officials to seek more community input before proceeding with any vote.
Despite the Zoning Board’s unanimous decision to reject the proposal, it could still advance if the Village Board chooses to overrule this recommendation. This possibility raises the stakes for those opposing ICE’s expansion in Broadview, where the agency already operates a contentious detention center that has been the focal point of protests against heightened immigration enforcement.
Residents packed the village hall, expressing a mix of frustration and determination to halt any formal process that would facilitate ICE’s expansion. The ongoing protests and public discourse highlight the community’s commitment to resisting policies perceived as harmful to their neighborhood.
WHAT’S NEXT: The next move lies with Broadview’s Village Board, which could decide to either uphold the Zoning Board’s recommendation or push the proposal through with a supermajority vote. Residents are urged to remain vigilant as the situation develops, advocating for a clear stance against ICE’s presence in their community.
This urgent update reflects a growing tension over immigration policies and their impact on local communities. With the future of Broadview hanging in the balance, residents are mobilizing to ensure their voices are heard in the ongoing debate over ICE’s operations.
