UPDATE: Attendance at Aurora’s Christkindlmarket has surged by 20% during favorable weather, but overall numbers remain down as the market heads into its final days. Maren Priebe, CEO of German American Events, confirmed this trend to The Beacon-News, highlighting the impact of severe winter conditions on visitor turnout.

Located at 360 N. Broadway, the Christkindlmarket at Aurora’s RiverEdge Park has been operating Thursdays through Sundays since November 21, 2023, and is now open daily until Christmas Eve. Officials noted that this year has seen record-breaking snowfall, with one November Saturday shattering a daily snowfall record set in 1951. Weather experts have labeled this the “quickest start to winter” since 1978, according to reports from the Chicago Tribune.

Despite the harsh weather, Priebe expressed optimism about the market’s popularity. “It’s pretty awesome to see people still coming out,” she said, attributing the increase in attendance during milder weather to a strong community following. “People forgot even that it snows that way here in the Midwest. We were all a little surprised.”

Attendance figures are currently lower than last year’s total of approximately 275,000 visitors, but Priebe projected that numbers could have reached 325,000–350,000 without the adverse weather conditions. She anticipates a rebound as temperatures are expected to rise leading up to Christmas.

Priebe highlighted the importance of community support, stating that the Aurora market has become a family tradition, drawing repeat visitors who engage in the seasonal festivities. “Good news travels fast,” she added, pointing out the venue’s convenient location near a Metra station and ample free parking.

The Aurora Christkindlmarket is also the first event held at RiverEdge Park since its renovation, which has introduced new facilities, including upgraded restrooms. With nearly 70 vendors this year—up from 55 at its inception—participants can explore a variety of offerings, from handmade crafts to traditional German foods.

Long lines for popular food stalls have become part of the market’s vibrant atmosphere, enhancing the festive spirit. Priebe remarked, “It’s the crowds, the people, the conversations. It puts people in positive spirits.”

New attractions this year include a gingerbread man scavenger hunt, where visitors can collect prizes by locating hidden gingerbread figures throughout the market. Additionally, glass-blowing classes have expanded, and a new limited-edition beer stein is attracting attention. Priebe urged attendees to secure their collectible cups quickly as supplies are dwindling.

As the Christkindlmarket nears its closing date, the community remains hopeful for a final surge in attendance, with many looking forward to enjoying the holiday season together. “Weather really has a big impact on whether or not people show up,” Priebe concluded, emphasizing the need for favorable conditions to boost visitor turnout.

For those planning to visit, make your way to Aurora’s Christkindlmarket soon to experience this festive event before it wraps up for the season.
