15-Year-Old Girl Killed in East Oakland Crash; Teen Arrested
UPDATE: Tragedy struck East Oakland as a 15-year-old girl was killed in a devastating car crash early Friday morning. A 16-year-old male has been arrested for vehicular manslaughter and hit and run after a series of collisions that left three other girls injured and sent shockwaves through the community.
At approximately 9:40 a.m. on July 14, 2023, authorities report that a Toyota Corolla carrying five juveniles was involved in a collision near the intersection of 14th Avenue and East 31st Street. The male driver fled the scene, merging onto Interstate 580, while the driver of the other vehicle pursued him, providing police with critical information as the situation unfolded.
The fleeing suspect exited the freeway at 35th Avenue, where he accelerated southbound at a reckless speed. Moments later, the Corolla collided with a third vehicle in the 3300 block of 35th Avenue, causing it to smash into a concrete wall.
All occupants of the Corolla were rushed to local hospitals, but tragically, the 15-year-old girl, who was seated in the back, succumbed to her injuries less than an hour later. The conditions of the other three girls remain unclear as of Sunday morning.
Witnesses reported the chaotic scene, and police confirmed that the driver responsible for the crash was also taken to a hospital, where he is currently in critical but stable condition. He has since been arrested.
