Senior wrestler Terrell McFarland of Pottsville High School reached a significant milestone by achieving 100 career wins on December 6, 2023. This accomplishment places him among an elite group, as only 16 wrestlers in the school’s history have reached this benchmark. McFarland’s performance has been exceptional, reflecting years of hard work and dedication to the sport.

Throughout his career, McFarland has secured multiple accolades, including being a three-time champion in the Schuylkill League. He has consistently placed in the top four at district competitions over the past three years and achieved notable finishes at regional tournaments, including a second-place finish as a freshman and a fifth-place finish as a sophomore. This season, he has already notched up 14 wins, maintaining an impressive undefeated record. Out of these victories, 10 have come by way of pin, with seven of those occurring in under a minute.

Coach Brad Leonard, who is also McFarland’s father, expressed immense pride in his son’s achievements. “He’s probably one in a million,” Leonard remarked, highlighting both the athletic prowess and leadership qualities McFarland demonstrates. Leonard emphasized the importance of McFarland’s mindset: “Ever since he was little, his mindset in wrestling has been to always be the best.”

The bond between father and son extends beyond coaching, as Leonard has ambitious plans for McFarland’s future in wrestling. “I’m thinking 2028 Olympics for Greco, and then probably UFC by age 30,” he stated confidently. This vision for McFarland reflects the family’s deep commitment to the sport.

A significant influence in McFarland’s journey is his older brother, Parrish McFarland, a graduate of Pottsville in 2024 and the school’s all-time leader in wins with 146. Terrell noted, “He helps me a lot through all the competition that we go through.” The sibling rivalry fuels Terrell’s determination to surpass Parrish’s legacy, although he remains appreciative of the support. This season, Parrish has assisted the wrestling team, allowing them to train closely together. “He’s been a huge asset,” Terrell said, adding that his brother’s advice helped him stay composed before matches.

The mental aspect of wrestling plays a crucial role in McFarland’s success. He recalled advice from his father that has shaped his approach: “Imagine if you become good at something that you don’t like; imagine how good you’d be at something that you do like.” This perspective has helped him navigate the emotional ups and downs of competition. “Just wanting to be the best I can be,” he stated when discussing his motivation for training.

As he continues his senior season, McFarland is focused on further accomplishments. “My goals right now — the closest goal is being a four-time league champ,” he explained. Achieving this would make him the first to do so in 23 years. He also aims to excel at districts and regionals, with aspirations of returning to the state competition podium, as he did during his freshman year.

With his recent milestone and a clear vision for his future, Terrell McFarland embodies the spirit of determination and excellence in high school athletics. His journey not only highlights personal achievements but also serves as an inspiration for young wrestlers in Pottsville and beyond.
