Rasmus Dahlin Returns to Sabres as Fiancée’s Health Improves
Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has returned to the team after taking a leave of absence to support his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, who is recovering from a heart transplant in Sweden. Dahlin rejoined the Sabres ahead of their game against the Detroit Red Wings on November 11, 2023.
Matovac’s health crisis began during a vacation in France last summer when she suffered sudden heart failure. She underwent life-saving treatment before being transferred to a hospital. Following her surgery, Matovac remained in Sweden for her recovery while Dahlin initially started the new season with the Sabres. He chose to return to Sweden on November 7 to be by her side during this critical time.
Team and Coach Support Dahlin’s Return
Dahlin expressed admiration for his fiancée’s strength, stating, “She’s an absolute warrior. She grinds every day, and she gets better every day.” His return to the team has sparked enthusiasm among his teammates, according to head coach Lindy Ruff. “Anytime you get your captain back, it’s a jolt for the team,” Ruff noted. “I think everybody was excited to see him.”
Dahlin has been a pivotal figure on the Sabres since being drafted first overall in 2018. Now in his second year as captain, he has anchored the team’s defense and has been a consistent performer, averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per game. Despite the personal challenges he has faced this season, Dahlin has managed to score nine points in 14 games.
As the Sabres look to build momentum in the upcoming matches, Dahlin’s presence is expected to have a significant impact on the team’s performance. His resilience in balancing personal and professional commitments resonates strongly with fans and teammates alike, making his return a moment of optimism for the franchise.
The Sabres’ upcoming schedule will test their depth and resolve, but with Dahlin back in the lineup, they aim to regain their competitive edge.
