The Rainier High School girls cross country team secured a commendable fourth place at the state championship, held on October 28, 2023, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. This achievement marks the second consecutive year the team has brought home a trophy, finishing with 111 points. The victory reflects their resilience amid a challenging season marked by injuries.

Head coach Rob Henry noted that the team faced multiple injury flare-ups throughout the season, impacting their performance. Despite these challenges, the athletes maintained their focus and dedication. “They never used it as an excuse, never looked for the easy way out,” Henry stated, highlighting the determination of his athletes.

In a highly competitive atmosphere, the Mountaineers showcased their talent with three runners finishing in the top 15. Komaire Robles led the team, securing third place overall with a personal best time of 19 minutes, 40.50 seconds. Following closely were Jazzy Shumate and Alexis Myers, who both earned individual medals by placing in the top 15. Shumate’s consistent performance, mirroring her district time, allowed her to capture her second medal in as many years, while Myers improved her time from the previous season by 20 seconds, finishing in 20:29.90.

The competition was fierce, with Liberty Bell clinching the Class 1B/2B state title with 94 points, while Chewelah and Pope John Paul II tied for second with 106 points. Rainier’s achievement is significant given the circumstances. Shumate reflected on the season, stating, “To place is a great accomplishment,” emphasizing the camaraderie and support among the team.

Injuries, particularly to knees and hips, have been a recurring issue throughout the season. Despite these setbacks, most of the team remained competitive, with Henry praising their spirit. “Probably the most resilient group of girls I’ve had,” he remarked. The Mountaineers were quick to adapt, showcasing their strength and commitment in every race.

Throughout the race, the star trio of Robles, Shumate, and Myers maintained strong positions, staying in the top 10 during the opening mile. Robles acknowledged her performance, stating, “In retrospect, the second half of the course, I would run it differently next year.” Shumate described her experience as “unexpected,” attributing her growth to the supportive environment created by her teammates.

The team’s depth was evident, with Kinsley Barlow placing 38th and Ruby King finishing 97th, rounding out Rainier’s scoring five. With the exception of Shumate, who is set to graduate, the team remains optimistic about future seasons. Robles expressed confidence in their potential, stating, “We’re going to try to rise above it and do the best we can.”

The performance of other District 4 teams also contributed to an exciting day at the state championship. Toledo placed 12th, with top runners Braelyn Nyberg and Onica Chase finishing 53rd and 54th, respectively. Mossyrock finished 15th, while Joan Wedam of Vikings claimed 67th in her final state meet. Additionally, Adna saw debut performances from Iris Ballif and Chloe Gevin, finishing 75th and 91st.

As the season wraps up, Rainier High School’s girls cross country team can take pride in their achievements, demonstrating resilience and determination, setting the stage for a promising future.
