NHL Rookies Shine Bright: Fantasy Hockey Impact in 2023
The 2023 NHL season has introduced a remarkable class of rookies, many of whom are making immediate impacts on their teams and in fantasy hockey leagues. Instead of being dominated by a few standout players, this year’s group showcases a diverse array of talent, with multiple individuals contributing positively to their respective franchises. With many already worthy of consideration in redraft fantasy leagues, the allure of these young athletes is hard to ignore.
As the season progresses, several rookies have emerged as must-add players, while others may require additional time to develop. Notably, every player highlighted in this analysis has participated in at least ten games, ensuring they are officially part of their teams and likely to remain in the NHL for the foreseeable future.
Rookies Making Waves
**Matthew Schaefer**, a defenseman for the New York Islanders, stands out with a historic achievement. On November 5, 2023, he scored twice against the Columbus Blue Jackets, making him the youngest defenseman in NHL history to score multiple goals in a game. At just **18 years old**, Schaefer has already tallied five goals and six assists, including five power-play points, making him a valuable asset in fantasy leagues. His performance positions him second on his team in fantasy value, second only to teammate **Bo Horvat**.
Another rookie worth noting is **Ivan Demidov** of the Montreal Canadiens. With a **46.6%** roster percentage in fantasy leagues, Demidov has captivated audiences with his electrifying playstyle. Averaging over **2.5 fantasy points** per game recently, he is on pace for an impressive season, showcasing a talent that should be recognized in all but the shallowest fantasy leagues.
**Alexander Nikishin** of the Carolina Hurricanes has also made a significant impact, accumulating six points on just **21 shots** in twelve games. His solid stats, including **18 blocked shots** and **35 hits**, demonstrate his well-rounded game. With increased ice time expected due to injuries on the team, he is becoming an appealing option for those needing defensive help.
**Jimmy Snuggerud**, playing for the St. Louis Blues, has proven to be a bright spot in what has otherwise been a challenging start to the season for the franchise. Averaging **18:12** of ice time in recent games, he has recorded four goals and four assists this season. If his current trajectory continues, a **25-goal, 25-assist** season is within reach.
**Beckett Sennecke** from the Anaheim Ducks has also shown glimpses of potential. Although his performances have been inconsistent, a recent game against the New Jersey Devils saw him score one goal and provide an assist. As he finds his footing, his alignment on a steady scoring line may help him develop into a more reliable fantasy option.
Rookies Yet to Find Their Rhythm
While several rookies are thriving, others are still finding their way. **Emmitt Finnie** of the Detroit Red Wings enjoyed a brief surge with four goals in four consecutive games but has since gone scoreless in five. Despite this slump, his continued presence on the top line with **Dylan Larkin** suggests he could bounce back soon.
**Zeev Buium** of the Minnesota Wild has faced challenges as well. After a promising start, his reduced ice time and absence from the top power play unit have hindered his contributions. Fantasy managers may need to exercise patience as he navigates early career hurdles.
**Sam Rinzel** of the Chicago Blackhawks has yet to produce any points on the power play, despite being a regular on the top unit. With less than **18 minutes** of playtime per contest, his fantasy appeal has diminished, making it essential for managers to monitor his development closely.
In goal, **Jakub Dobes** of the Montreal Canadiens is making waves with a perfect **6-0** record and impressive stats, including a **.930 save percentage**. As the season progresses, he may emerge as a critical player for fantasy managers in need of goalie support.
**Yaroslav Askarov** of the San Jose Sharks has shown improvement, securing consecutive wins against formidable opponents. However, his team’s overall struggles suggest he may not yet be a consistent fantasy performer.
As the NHL season unfolds, these rookies could significantly influence fantasy hockey landscapes. Their varied performances offer a glimpse into the future of the league, making them essential additions for those looking to enhance their fantasy teams.
