Lane Kiffin’s Future Uncertain as SEC Coaching Carousel Heats Up
All eyes are on Lane Kiffin, head coach of Ole Miss, as he approaches a pivotal decision regarding his future in college football. With interest from both Florida and LSU, Kiffin is expected to announce his plans by Saturday, November 25, 2023. This decision comes just a day after his team, currently ranked No. 6, faces off against Mississippi State in the annual “Egg Bowl.”
The coaching landscape in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) is bustling with activity as various programs seek to fill vacant positions. Both Florida and LSU are generating significant buzz, while other schools like Auburn and Arkansas are also in search of new leadership. Reports suggest that Auburn is narrowing its focus on Jon Sumrall, the head coach at Tulane, as a potential candidate to fill their vacancy.
Meanwhile, Arkansas has been relatively quiet since the firing of Sam Pittman on September 28, 2023. The Razorbacks are reportedly considering several candidates, including recently dismissed Chip Kelly, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. Kelly’s experience and play-calling abilities could make him an intriguing choice for Arkansas, particularly after his success in college football.
Another name emerging in the conversation is Eric Morris, head coach at North Texas. According to Pete Nakos of On3, Morris is viewed as a “top contender” for head coaching roles at both Oklahoma State and Arkansas. His reputation for developing quarterbacks has garnered attention, especially since he has mentored notable players such as Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Cam Ward of the Tennessee Titans.
Morris, 40, has a strong coaching background. He played wide receiver at Texas Tech and served as the offensive coordinator when Mahomes was a standout player there. During his tenure, he and former head coach Kliff Kingsbury were instrumental in developing Mahomes into a first-round NFL draft pick. Following his stint at Texas Tech, Morris took the head coaching role at Incarnate Word, achieving a record of 24-18. He later spent a year as the offensive coordinator at Washington State before taking over at North Texas, where he boasts a record of 21-15.
Currently, North Texas is enjoying a successful season with a record of 10-1, preparing to complete the regular season against Temple. The performance of freshman quarterback Drew Mestemaker has also drawn praise, showcasing Morris’ ability to develop talent at the position.
As the SEC coaching carousel continues to spin, the outcomes of Kiffin’s decision and the search for new leadership at Arkansas and other programs are expected to have a significant impact on the landscape of college football in the coming weeks.
