The Vancouver Canucks have introduced a new custom jersey designed to celebrate Diwali, allowing fans to showcase their team pride during the festive season. The unique design, featuring a flame, a peacock, the night sky, and traditional phulkari patterns, was created by Surrey-based artist Suki Kaur. This marks the fifth consecutive year the Canucks have offered merchandise in honor of the holiday.

Kaur expressed her intent to create a design that resonates beyond just one cultural group. “The phulkari is special to me, because it’s such an integral part of Punjabi fashion, but I didn’t want it to speak just to Punjabis, because Diwali is not just about Punjabi people,” Kaur noted. “You see variations in every culture.”

The Canucks are set to host their Diwali night on November 1, 2023, in Abbotsford, followed by an event at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on November 5, 2023. Fans are eagerly anticipating these celebrations, with many expressing their excitement over the new jersey.

“I’m going to the Diwali game, so it’s gonna be cool to see it in person,” said Canucks fan Arjan Attwal. The team has made a variety of merchandise available, including hats, hoodies, and pucks, in addition to the jerseys, which retail for $750.

While some fans appreciate the design, others have raised concerns about the pricing. “It’s a nice design, I mean, for the price it’s terrible,” commented fan Austin Taylor. “A jersey of that price better come with front row seats and a dinner if you’re gonna pay that much.”

Despite the mixed reactions regarding cost, the introduction of the Diwali jersey demonstrates the Canucks’ commitment to inclusivity and cultural celebration. As the team continues to embrace diverse traditions, fans hope to see even more options in the future, further enriching the experience of celebrating Diwali within the sports community.

The Canucks’ initiative not only highlights their engagement with fans but also reflects a broader trend in sports organizations to acknowledge and celebrate various cultural events. This approach fosters a sense of community among supporters, encouraging participation in both the sport and the cultural festivities surrounding it.
