Avon Captures Regional Title in Thrilling Five-Set Match
The Avon Eagles secured their second consecutive Division II regional title on November 1, 2023, defeating the Wadsworth Grizzlies in a dramatic five-set match that concluded with scores of 25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, and 15-11. This victory at Streetsboro showcased the Eagles’ resilience and experience, as they improved their season record to 25-1 and now advance to face Magnificat in the Division II state semifinal on November 8 at Wittenberg University.
Match Highlights and Key Performers
The match began with Avon dominating the first set, winning decisively at 25-14. This early momentum, however, was challenged as Wadsworth quickly regrouped, taking a commanding 9-2 lead in set two. “I think the first set we came in and knew this was going to be an energy battle,” said Avon senior Londyn Stone. “We said the first set is how we’re going to set the tone.”
As the tension escalated, Avon managed to secure the third set with a score of 25-22. Wadsworth then retaliated, taking the fourth set 25-23 and forcing a decisive fifth set. The Eagles, familiar with high-pressure situations, maintained their composure. “Our coach tells us all the time we have a lot of experience in adversity and going five sets,” noted senior Lily Hamilton, referencing previous encounters that had prepared them for this moment.
Decisive Fifth Set and Strategy
In the fifth set, Avon established a quick 4-1 lead, aided by strong plays from Bethany Sherwood. Although Wadsworth managed to tie the set at 4-4, Avon regained control with a pivotal kill from Stone. The Eagles’ solid serving proved crucial, tallying 10 aces while Wadsworth struggled with double-digit serving errors. Avon held a narrow 10-9 advantage before Stone delivered the final, match-winning kill.
“When we were on that court today, we were like, ‘We’re not ending on this’. We are not ending our season today,” Stone emphasized, reflecting the team’s determination.
Stone led Avon with an impressive 21 kills, while Hamilton contributed 20 kills and Sherwood added 17 kills. For Wadsworth, Lauren Decker stood out with a match-high 29 kills, showcasing the competitive nature of both teams.
After the match, Avon coach Kara Coffman praised Wadsworth’s strong performance, particularly highlighting Decker’s impact. “I think Wadsworth is a really great team… For us, I feel like we always have at least one big hitter in the front row,” Coffman said. “Our depth is so amazing, it doesn’t really matter what rotation we’re in.”
With this victory, the Avon Eagles not only defend their regional title but also carry forward the momentum into the state semifinals, where they will aim for further success on the court.
