Innovator Captures Light at 2 Billion Frames Per Second

A remarkable feat in high-speed photography has been achieved by innovator Brian Haidet, who recently published a video on his AlphaPhoenix channel demonstrating a laser beam captured at an astonishing 2 billion frames per second. While the video itself is a one pixel by one pixel recording, Haidet enhances the visual experience by repeating the footage to create a full rendering, showcasing the intriguing properties of light.
Haidet’s latest project builds on his previous success, where in December 2022 he developed a camera capable of recording at 1 million frames per second. To reach the new milestone, he completely overhauled his equipment, upgrading the motors, hardware, oscilloscope, signaling, recording software, and processing software. This comprehensive redesign allowed him to significantly improve the resolution and functionality of his setup.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Haidet’s experiment is the way it visually represents the concept of special relativity. The footage reveals that light appears to travel faster when approaching the camera compared to when it moves away. This effect results from the setup: laser beams reflecting off fog particles closer to the camera arrive sooner than those bouncing back from further distances. Essentially, Haidet has created a visual manifestation of a fundamental principle of physics right from his garage.
The implications of this experiment extend beyond mere curiosity. High-speed photography at such unprecedented rates can offer insights into various fields, including physics, engineering, and even artistic expression. The ability to visualize light in this manner opens doors to deeper understanding of light behavior and its interactions with matter.
For those intrigued by Haidet’s work, additional material is available for a more in-depth exploration of the technology and techniques employed in this groundbreaking project. His dedication to pushing the boundaries of high-speed imaging is evident, and the results are not only technically impressive but also visually captivating.
