Gen Z Innovators Reject Musk’s Millions to Pursue AI Vision
Young AI researchers William Chen and Guan Wang have turned down a multimillion-dollar offer from Elon Musk to concentrate on their groundbreaking AI model, Sapient Intelligence. The duo, both 22 years old, chose to pursue their vision rather than accept investment from Musk’s company, xAI.
What initially sparked their journey was the creation of a small large-language model (LLM) called OpenChat while they were studying at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This model utilized reinforcement learning (RL) to enhance its capabilities, drawing attention from academic circles. Recognizing their potential, Musk extended a generous offer, but Chen and Wang opted to decline and focus on a new AI architecture designed to address the limitations of traditional large-scale machine learning.
Their decision led to the development of Sapient Intelligence, a “brain-inspired” reasoning system that has surpassed some of the world’s leading AI systems in abstract reasoning tests. According to a report by Fortune, both researchers are optimistic that their model will be a significant step toward achieving “artificial general intelligence” (AGI), a form of machine intelligence capable of matching or exceeding human cognitive abilities.
From High School to AI Innovators
Chen and Wang’s collaboration began in Michigan, where they met in high school and discovered a shared passion for AI and optimization. Their partnership continued at Tsinghua University, where they faced academic challenges but received crucial support from their professors for their innovative work.
Currently, the team behind Sapient Intelligence is preparing to establish a U.S. office, secure additional funding, and launch the second version of their model. They assert that the ability for an AI model to learn continuously without the need for retraining from scratch represents a pivotal milestone in the field.

The choice by Chen and Wang to reject Musk’s offer reflects the rising confidence among young innovators in their capacity to influence the future of artificial intelligence. Their brain-inspired reasoning system has already shown promise by outperforming established AI systems.
The duo’s emphasis on continuous learning presents the potential for significant advancements in AI technology. This could ultimately lead to the creation of machines with cognitive abilities comparable to or even greater than those of humans. The trajectory of Sapient Intelligence may mark a transformative moment in the development of intelligent systems, paving the way for a future where AI plays an even more integral role in society.
