Esteemed Biologist David Ellis Brest Passes Away at 85
David Ellis Brest, a respected biologist and beloved family member, passed away at the age of 85. He died peacefully on October 15, 2023, with his devoted wife, Patricia Brest, by his side. A lifelong resident of Southern California, David’s legacy will be cherished by family, friends, and students alike.
Early Life and Education
Born the youngest of three boys in San Gabriel, California, David developed a passion for nature during his childhood. Family camping trips and outdoor adventures with his twin brother, Dennis Brest, sowed the seeds for his future career. David pursued his love for the natural world by studying Forestry at the University of Oregon, followed by a PhD in Biology from UCLA. His time at these institutions sparked a friendly rivalry with his brother, who was loyal to the University of Southern California.
David dedicated 35 years to teaching in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, before retiring in 2003. His engaging lectures, particularly on photosynthesis, became a hallmark of his teaching style, often shared in light-hearted moments with family.
A Life Filled with Love and Dedication
David met Patricia at California State University, where his humor and intellect quickly won her over. The couple married in June of 1987, forging a partnership built on mutual respect and affection. Throughout their life together, David was a devoted family man, nurturing relationships with his stepchildren and grandchildren.
Known for his calm demeanor and problem-solving abilities, David approached challenges with patience and focus. Whether tackling a difficult sudoku or mediating family discussions, he provided a steady presence, likened to a lighthouse guiding ships through stormy seas.
David’s love for the outdoors continued throughout his life, creating cherished memories during family camping trips to destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, and Pismo Beach. After his passing, his ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove next to the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows.
David is survived by his wife, Patricia; stepchildren Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst; grandchildren Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, Casey and Jay Pabst; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Herbert Brest, his oldest brother Loren Brest, and his twin brother, Dennis.
David Ellis Brest leaves behind a legacy of love, knowledge, and connection, which will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
