As Thanksgiving approaches, economic uncertainty has led to increased lines for food distribution in San Antonio. On Saturday, multiple nonprofits and organizations provided turkeys to families grappling with food insecurity, helping hundreds prepare for the holiday.

At the Greater Love Baptist Church, community members gathered in a line that stretched nearly a mile, according to Reverend James Robinson, who has overseen turkey distributions for over 22 years. “It’s nice to see that the community comes out to help each other out in times where things are gonna be a little bit rough,” said Andrew Perales, one of the individuals waiting for assistance.

The Bexar County Health Department also participated in the effort, distributing hundreds of turkeys at Covington Park specifically to grandparents raising grandchildren. Mary Mendez, a grandmother who has been raising her granddaughter since she was eight months old, expressed the challenges many face during the holiday season. “There’s a lot of people in need in times of holidays,” she stated.

Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai emphasized the significance of these distributions, noting, “It is a real problem, it is a problem right now.” The current economic climate has heightened the need for assistance, prompting various organizations to step up their efforts.

Numerous nonprofits are offering free turkeys to families in need this week. For those looking for assistance, a comprehensive list of distribution sites is available through local resources. The San Antonio Food Bank has also called for additional turkey donations to ensure that all families can enjoy a festive holiday meal.

In addition to these efforts, San Antonio Spurs players are engaging in community events throughout the week, further highlighting the collaborative spirit of the city during this critical time. As the community rallies together, the hope is that no family will go without a meal this Thanksgiving.
