In Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, the Christmas spirit is embodied by a striking 37-foot Santa Claus cutout that has become a beloved local landmark. Known affectionately as “The Tallest Santa in Pennsylvania,” this festive figure represents more than just holiday cheer; it is a piece of community history that has stood since 1959.

After last year’s display was severely damaged by high winds, the Philipsburg Elks Lodge Santa Committee took action to restore this iconic symbol. Committee chairman John Herrington announced that the new Santa is “bigger and stronger than ever,” emphasizing the community’s commitment to keeping this tradition alive. It took approximately two months to construct and paint the new statue, which now stands proudly at Cold Stream Dam and Recreation Park along Route 322.

Community Tradition Revived

The origins of the Philipsburg Santa date back to a project spearheaded by local resident Bill Adams, who graduated from Philipsburg High School in 1937. The statue was initially created as part of an American Legion initiative, and its 37-foot height is a nod to both its creator and the town’s festive spirit.

The renewed statue was unveiled just in time for the holiday season, allowing residents and visitors alike to enjoy its festive presence. The celebration of Santa extends beyond the cutout itself; in 2008, the local band Lords a Leaping released a song called “Forty Foot Santa,” further embedding the giant figure into the cultural fabric of Philipsburg.

A Symbol of Holiday Joy

The Philipsburg community has rallied around this remarkable display, using it as a focal point for holiday festivities. Residents can view photographs and a timelapse video documenting the raising of the Santa on the Two Guys and a Camera website or their Facebook page.

As the Christmas season unfolds, the sight of the towering Santa serves as a reminder of the joy and unity that the holiday brings to the town. With its rich history and renewed vigor, “The Tallest Santa in Pennsylvania” continues to capture the hearts of many, ensuring that the spirit of Christmas shines brightly in Philipsburg.
