Madison Hedglin Claims MAC Championship as Misericordia Shines
DOYLESTOWN — In a standout performance, Madison Hedglin, a freshman at Misericordia University, secured the MAC cross country championship on October 28, 2023. The event took place at Delaware Valley University, where Hedglin’s impressive finish contributed to the Cougars’ second-place team standing with a total of 55 points, just behind Lebanon Valley College.
Hedglin’s remarkable achievement earned her the titles of MAC Runner of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Teammate Madison Kammer also had a notable performance, finishing fifth overall in the individual standings. The success of the women’s cross country team highlights a strong season for Misericordia.
Success Across Other Sports
In addition to cross country, the Misericordia women’s soccer team continued their dominance with a convincing 5-0 victory over Lebanon Valley. At Mangelsdorf Field, Esabella Mendola and Olivia Maniskas each contributed two goals, while Kim Ruby added another. This win solidified Misericordia’s position as the No. 1 seed in the MAC Freedom playoffs, finishing the regular season undefeated.
The Cougars also found success in field hockey, where they defeated Delaware Valley 4-0. Madison Lasinski led the scoring with two goals, supported by goals from Madison Blauch and Ashley Pitz. Sarah Bogina recorded two saves to secure the shutout.
In men’s sports, the Misericordia Cougars faced challenges. The men’s soccer team fell to the third place in their division, while the wrestling team debuted at the Ned McGinley Invitational, finishing fifth with a total of 95.5 points. Notably, Ryan Santiago (141 lbs) and Jaryn Hartranft (165 lbs) both earned first-place finishes in their weight classes, showcasing individual excellence.
Mixed Results in Volleyball and Hockey
The women’s volleyball team faced a tough day at Vassar College, losing two matches. They were edged out by RIT in a five-set battle, where Lindsay Arezina led the team with 10 kills. Later, they were swept by Vassar in straight sets, marking a challenging outing for the Monarchs.
In hockey, the Misericordia men’s team opened their season with a 5-1 loss to Trine University at the SUNY-Canton Tournament. Samuel Libetti scored the lone goal for the Cougars, with assists from Jaron Ketterman and Corbin Scheibel.
The overall performance of the Misericordia teams this weekend reflects a blend of triumphs and challenges, showcasing the competitive spirit of the university in various sports. As teams prepare for the upcoming playoffs and tournaments, the focus will be on building on these experiences and striving for further success in the season ahead.
