Study Reveals Effective Alternative for Breast Cancer Surgery Guidance
A recent study conducted by researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute has unveiled a promising alternative for guiding breast cancer surgery. The study, published in 2023, indicates that Radioactive Seed Localization (RSL) is equally effective as the traditional Wire Localization (WL) method, while enhancing the overall experience for both patients and surgeons.
The findings suggest that RSL not only matches the effectiveness of WL in accurately locating breast tumors but also offers significant benefits in terms of patient comfort. In WL, a wire is used to mark the tumor’s location prior to surgery, often causing anxiety and discomfort for patients. Conversely, RSL employs a small radioactive seed that is implanted in the tumor, allowing for a less invasive and more comfortable procedure.
Dr. Jennifer M. Gass, a leading author of the study, emphasized the importance of patient-centered care in the surgical process. “Our research aims to improve the surgical experience for women undergoing breast cancer treatment,” Dr. Gass stated.
