Lizzo recently shared her struggles with mental health and self-image during her weight loss journey, revealing that at the start, she felt “extremely suicidal.” In a candid post on her Substack account dated November 23, 2023, the 37-year-old singer reflected on the challenges she faced following a public scandal that left her feeling isolated and betrayed.

The Grammy-winning artist described the onset of her weight loss journey in the fall of 2023, stating, “I was severely depressed. I had been the subject of vicious scandal, and it felt like the whole world turned its back on me.” This period of turmoil was exacerbated by a lawsuit filed against her by three former backup dancers, which led to a wave of negative attention and accusations from people she once considered friends. In her own words, Lizzo expressed feelings of deep anger and frustration, saying, “I was angry every single day. Mostly because I couldn’t go out and defend myself.”

To cope with her emotional pain, Lizzo turned to pilates, using physical activity as a form of therapy. She admitted to shedding tears during workouts, recognizing that while she did begin to lose weight, it was not her primary focus. “I had decided that winter to sit and record a video saying I wanted to intentionally lose weight. Why? I guess I felt like I had lost everything, and I wanted to change,” she explained.

Lizzo’s journey evolved from merely losing weight to what she now describes as “releasing” it. She noted that her weight had served as a protective shield throughout her life, especially following the death of her father in 2009 and enduring toxic relationships since 2011. “I wanted to let-it-the-f*** go,” she wrote.

In her post, Lizzo emphasized that her motivation for weight loss was not about conforming to societal standards of thinness. She acknowledged that she would always carry the physical signs of her past, stating, “I will always have the stretch, and the skin of a woman who carries great weight.” Despite the scrutiny she faces as a public figure, Lizzo remains proud of her body and its history. She described her experience in the industry as “borderline emotional abuse” due to her weight, but she has managed to find empowerment in her self-acceptance.

Lizzo also addressed the impact of societal expectations on body image, criticizing the notion that plus-sized models are being sidelined in the fashion industry. “Objectively Big. Over 200 pounds. And I love myself as much as I’ve loved myself no matter what the scale says,” she asserted.

Reflecting on the body positivity movement, Lizzo called for a return to its roots, stating, “We continue to have conversations. We continue to hold each other accountable.” She expressed her desire for the movement to grow and evolve beyond its commercialization.

As Lizzo continues her journey, she remains committed to fostering a more nuanced understanding of body image and self-worth. She concluded her post with a call for continued dialogue and support within the community, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding in overcoming societal pressures.
