Tory Lanez Challenges Megan Thee Stallion’s Victim Status in Appeal
Tory Lanez has recently filed an appeal seeking to overturn his conviction and ten-year prison sentence for the shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. This move comes as Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, continues to navigate the legal complexities surrounding the case, which has now entered its fifth year. His appeal was unsuccessful, but it has drawn significant attention due to its focus on the characterization of Megan as a “vulnerable victim.”
Lanez’s legal team did not contest the findings of Judge Herriford, who stated that Lanez’s behavior following the shooting significantly influenced the severity of his sentence. Instead, they challenged the notion that Megan Thee Stallion was a vulnerable victim, a designation that, under California law, can lead to harsher sentencing. According to journalist Meghann Cuniff on Twitter, the appeal highlighted Kelsey Harris’ testimony, in which she recounted witnessing Lanez reaching for a firearm after threatening Megan. The appeal filing argued that this indicated “there were indeed signs that an armed individual may be in the vehicle,” suggesting that Megan had the opportunity to escape when faced with potential danger.
The implications of this case extend beyond the appeal. Lanez’s original arrest in 2022 means that, barring any changes to his sentence, he could be eligible for release by 2032, factoring in time served. There has yet to be official confirmation regarding his exact release date.
Legal Developments in the Defamation Case
In a related matter, Lanez is also set to give his third deposition in a defamation lawsuit brought by blogger Milagro Gramz. He has expressed concerns that this deposition might negatively impact his criminal appeal, but the court has denied his request to postpone it. This case has drawn further attention as it involves testimonies from notable figures like Adin Ross and DJ Akademiks.
As the legal drama unfolds, it remains uncertain how these civil and criminal cases will intertwine. The ongoing saga between Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion shows no signs of resolution, with each new development contributing to the complexity of their legal battles. Legal experts and fans alike are watching closely, as this may be one of the last significant hurdles before the public narrative surrounding their conflict begins to quiet down.
