“Sharknado” Franchise Returns with Origins Film Set for 2026
The cult classic franchise “Sharknado” is making a comeback with a new film titled “Sharknado Origins.” This revival comes seven years after the release of its sixth installment and aims to explore the backstory of the franchise’s beloved characters. Production is set to begin later this year under the direction of filmmaker Anthony Ferrante, who helmed the original series.
The initial “Sharknado” films, which debuted in 2013, captivated audiences with their outrageous premise of tornadoes that lifted sharks from the ocean and unleashed them across Los Angeles. The upcoming film will introduce teenage versions of fan-favorite characters: Ian Ziering‘s Fin and Tara Reid‘s April. The plot will center around their chance meeting during a seemingly perfect summer, where romance blossoms just as chaos strikes.
As Fin prepares to propose with a promise ring, a sudden storm disrupts their moment, bringing forth a massive funnel cloud and a flurry of sharks from the ocean. The tagline humorously notes, “nothing says young love like airborne predators,” hinting at the film’s blend of romance and absurdity that fans have come to expect.
Casting decisions are expected to be announced in the coming months. The release is scheduled for summer 2026, promising to attract both long-time fans and new audiences intrigued by the franchise’s distinctive mix of action and comedy.
The “Sharknado” series has gained a loyal following due to its campy appeal and over-the-top scenarios. The return of this franchise marks a significant moment in entertainment, showcasing the continued interest in innovative and entertaining storytelling.
As production details unfold, audiences worldwide are eager to see how this beloved series evolves while retaining the humor and excitement that made it a pop culture phenomenon.
