Millie Bobby Brown Addresses Appearance Criticism, Calls It Bullying
Millie Bobby Brown has publicly addressed the intense scrutiny regarding her appearance, labeling the online criticism and unfounded plastic surgery rumors as bullying. In an enlightening interview with British Vogue, the Stranger Things star discussed the emotional toll that public commentary has taken on her mental health and why she has decided to speak out.
The 21-year-old actress revealed that during the promotional period for her film The Electric State, she was subjected to harsh comments and baseless speculation about her looks. Reflecting on this difficult experience, Brown stated, “I was depressed for three, four days. I was crying every day,” highlighting the impact of the negative attention she received earlier this year.
While acknowledging that media scrutiny is part of her career, Brown made a clear distinction between legitimate reporting and harassment. She expressed her frustration, saying, “I understand that there’s paparazzi — even though it feels like s*** to me — I know that’s your job. But don’t, in your headline, slam me at the get-go. It is so wrong, and it is bullying, especially to young girls who are new to this industry.”
Standing Up to Online Criticism
Brown has previously responded to online trolls who criticized her evolving style and maturity. She emphasized that she refuses to apologize for growing up, stating, “If me being blonde or wearing more makeup really bothers you, I’m going to address it — not just for myself, but for every other girl who wants to try a new hairstyle or wear a red lip.” Her passionate response serves as a broader message of empowerment, encouraging young women to embrace their individuality.
The actress also criticized media outlets for sensationalizing stories about her appearance, which she believes can cross into bullying territory. “It is bullying, especially to young girls who are new to this industry,” she remarked. Brown’s comments resonate with many of her fans, who support her fight against body-shaming and unrealistic expectations in Hollywood.
Promoting Empowerment and Self-Love
Despite facing negativity, Brown is determined to use her platform to uplift and empower young individuals who encounter similar challenges. “I can’t silence the 500 million people behind their phones. So what is the realistic route here? I think it’s just uplift and empower young people,” she said. Her focus is on instilling self-love and confidence in young women, reinforcing that they should believe in themselves regardless of outside criticism.
In addition to her advocacy for mental health and self-acceptance, Brown shared a personal milestone: she and her husband, Jake Bongiovi, have recently adopted a baby girl. She described this life-changing experience while emphasizing her commitment to keeping her daughter’s life private. The couple, who married earlier in 2023, value family privacy and strive to protect their child from the public eye.
Brown’s evolving journey from her breakout role as Eleven in Stranger Things to her ventures in film and beauty has been marked by challenges associated with growing up in the spotlight. Through her experiences, she advocates for a healthier online culture—one that allows women to evolve without fear of judgment. Her powerful message serves as a reminder that behind every headline is a human being, and that kindness is crucial in today’s digital landscape.
