Mika Amonsen Responds to Backlash Over Sean Reagan Recasting
Mika Amonsen has addressed the backlash following his casting as Sean Reagan in the spinoff series Boston Blue, which airs on CBS. Amonsen takes over the role from Andrew Terraciano, who portrayed Sean throughout the original series Blue Bloods from 2010 to 2024. The transition has sparked mixed reactions from fans, prompting Amonsen to reflect on the challenges of stepping into such a beloved character.
Fans Share Mixed Reactions
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Amonsen acknowledged the negativity surrounding his casting. “There’s been some negativity, for sure,” he stated. Yet, he also highlighted the support he has received, noting that many fans are rallying behind him and appreciating his interpretation of the character. “They’re really enjoying the show and they love where it’s going in terms of Sean, and that makes me happy,” he added.
Sean Reagan, originally introduced in Blue Bloods, is the son of Donnie Wahlberg‘s character, Danny Reagan. The character has been a significant part of the show’s narrative, which concluded in April 2024 after 14 successful seasons. Sean was initially portrayed by Terraciano, whose performance garnered a dedicated fan base.
Amonsen’s Approach to the Role
Following the announcement of the Boston Blue spinoff, Amonsen felt considerable pressure to honor Terraciano’s legacy. “I definitely felt a ton of pressure at first. I wanted to respect Andrew the best I could,” he explained. To pay tribute to Terraciano’s portrayal, Amonsen made specific visual choices, such as hair styling, to maintain continuity with the character’s established image.
Amonsen emphasized his commitment to respecting Sean’s character while also adding his unique touch. “I really want to maintain Sean as close as I can in the ways that I do it out of respect for this character that everyone loves— but also the character Andrew built,” he said. He engaged in binge-watching key episodes from the later seasons of Blue Bloods to better understand Sean’s development into adulthood and his relationship with Danny.
As he explored the character, Amonsen discovered similarities between himself and Terraciano. “Watching Andrew’s performance, I actually noticed a lot of similarities just between us as people, and our energy. It’s quite upbeat,” he shared. This realization provided him comfort as he navigated his own interpretation of Sean.
Amonsen concluded by expressing excitement about the dynamic he is exploring with Wahlberg’s character. “We’re really just exploring what would have been. Of course, it is my own version of it but at the same time we haven’t seen this relationship with Sean and his dad before,” he stated. The spinoff aims to delve into Sean’s journey as a police officer, a narrative direction that was not previously addressed in the original series.
Boston Blue airs on CBS on Fridays at 22:00 ET, offering viewers a fresh perspective on the beloved characters from Blue Bloods. As Amonsen takes on this new role, fans are left to see how his portrayal will contribute to the legacy of the franchise.
