Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may have mixed feelings as it has been confirmed that Frank Castle, portrayed by Jon Bernthal, will not appear in the upcoming season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. However, the addition of Matthew Lillard to the cast brings an intriguing new dynamic to the series. Lillard will step into the role of Mr. Charles, a character poised to challenge the power of Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, who currently serves as the mayor of New York.

As details about Lillard’s character remain largely under wraps, he recently shared some insights in an interview with MovieWeb. He emphasized that Mr. Charles is a completely new entity in Hell’s Kitchen, stating, “I do not wear any lycra of any kind.” This comment hints at a departure from the traditional superhero costume tropes often seen in the MCU. Lillard has collaborated with Dario Scardapane, the new showrunner, in the past on the project “The Bridge,” and expressed enthusiasm for the character Scardapane created.

In an October conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Lillard described Mr. Charles as “a bit of a new antagonist on the field” who possesses a level of influence comparable to Fisk. This development suggests that viewers can anticipate significant interactions between the two characters, particularly since they have a history together, having previously worked on the film “Spanish Judges” in 2000.

Lillard conveyed his excitement for the role, mentioning, “It fits perfectly with the tone I bring as an actor. There are big energy moments. There are simple moments.” This indicates a versatility in his performance that may resonate well with audiences. He also noted that feedback from those involved with the show has been overwhelmingly positive, saying, “I’ve heard from multiple people that they’re over the moon about what it is.”

As fans eagerly await Daredevil: Born Again season 2, set to premiere on March 4, 2026, Lillard’s character promises to bring fresh challenges to the narrative. As the MCU continues to expand, viewers will be keen to see how the new dynamics unfold in the gritty world of Hell’s Kitchen.
