Ryan Reynolds Reveals Unique Leadership Style at CMO Summit
Ryan Reynolds shared insights into his unconventional leadership style during an engaging session at the Wall Street Journal CMO Council Summit in October 2023. The discussion, led by Maryam Banikarim, chair of the Wall Street Journal Leadership Institute, focused on Reynolds’ experiences as an actor and producer, as well as his thoughts on creativity and risk-taking in business.
Reynolds emphasized the importance of feedback and “dissent” in fostering creativity on film sets. He explained that he often feels uneasy when team members simply agree with his proposals due to his position as the leader. “I’m screwed if people start agreeing with me, cause I’m the boss or something,” he stated, highlighting his desire for open dialogue.
During the conversation, he elaborated on his collaborative approach at his production company, Maximum Effort. Reynolds noted that while he confidently manages certain aspects of production, he actively seeks input from his crew by proposing deliberately poor jokes and lines. This tactic aims to encourage others to voice their opinions, leading to constructive discussions. “Next thing you know, we’re exploring some incredibly fun, sparkly idea,” he remarked.
Reynolds also reflected on his earlier years in the film industry, revealing that he once held back strong opinions to maintain harmony on set. At 49, he now recognizes the accountability that comes with his leading roles, which has propelled him to take charge and assert his ideas.
His distinctive leadership philosophy has translated into a successful career, both in film and business. Under Reynolds’ guidance, Maximum Effort has produced notable films such as Deadpool, Free Guy, and The Adam Project. Additionally, his entrepreneurial ventures, including the popular beverage brand Aviation Gin and the mobile network operator Mint Mobile, have achieved significant recognition.
Reynolds’ refreshing perspective on leadership not only showcases his commitment to collaboration but also reflects his success in navigating the challenges of both Hollywood and the business world. His approach serves as a valuable reminder of the benefits of fostering an environment where ideas can flourish, regardless of hierarchy.
