X Maintains User Base in US Social Media Landscape Despite Rivals
The social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, has demonstrated resilience in the United States, maintaining a consistent user base amid rising competition. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, approximately 21 percent of American adults report using the platform. This figure reflects a slight decrease from 22 percent in early 2023, shortly after the acquisition by Elon Musk, and closely aligns with the 23 percent usage rate noted in 2021 before the rebranding. While the change may seem marginal, it underscores enduring user habits in an ever-evolving social media environment.
Competitive Landscape and User Habits
Despite the frequent emergence of new platforms vying for attention, X remains a dominant player in the text-focused, real-time update arena. The Pew data indicates that X significantly outpaces newer competitors, with Threads, launched by Meta, capturing only 8 percent of adults and Bluesky attracting a mere 4 percent. Even Truth Social struggles to gain traction, with only 3 percent of adults using it.
The survey, which involved over 5,000 U.S. adults, suggests that users remain loyal to established platforms like X, despite the allure of alternatives promising a fresh experience. This loyalty may stem from familiarity and the platform’s specific role in providing real-time updates, especially for those seeking immediate news.
Demographic Insights and News Consumption
While X has maintained its position within its niche, it does not rank among the most widely used social platforms overall. Video-centric platforms like YouTube lead the pack, with 84 percent of U.S. adults reporting usage, followed closely by Facebook at 71 percent and Instagram at 50 percent. Notably, TikTok has seen substantial growth, rising to 37 percent from 21 percent in 2021, while WhatsApp usage has also increased to 32 percent.
Challenges arise for X particularly regarding its younger demographic. The findings reveal a decline in users aged 18 to 29, a cohort often key to shaping long-term social media trends. Despite this, X continues to be a vital source for political discourse and breaking news, with around 57 percent of its users regularly accessing news through the platform. This percentage exceeds those reported for other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, highlighting X’s unique value as a news source.
The relatively stable user numbers suggest that, despite controversies and the emergence of new rivals, X continues to fulfill a significant role for many Americans. Whether driven by habit, convenience, or the immediacy of updates, the platform retains a community that appreciates its offerings, even as alternatives continue to emerge with promises of innovation.
In summary, the latest Pew Research Center findings paint a picture of a robust, albeit niche, platform in X, which, while facing competitive pressures, continues to serve a dedicated audience in the fast-paced social media landscape.
