Paige Metayer Leads Washington Spirit in NWSL Championship Showdown
UPDATE: Paige Metayer, a standout midfielder from Cal, is set to lead the Washington Spirit into the NWSL Championship against Gotham FC at PayPal Park in San Jose this Saturday, October 21, 2024. This thrilling match is crucial as both teams vie for the coveted title in a highly anticipated showdown.
Metayer has emerged as one of the league’s most dynamic players, known for her versatility across multiple positions—including forward, midfield, and fullback. Last year, she played a pivotal role in the Spirit’s championship run, starting at right back in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Orlando.
After going undrafted, Metayer proved her worth during preseason with the Spirit, quickly earning her spot on the team by showcasing her adaptability. In her rookie year, she started all 21 matches she played, scoring three goals, all from headers off corner kicks—an unexpected strength she developed during her time in the league.
“It wasn’t something I specialized in. I wasn’t very tall growing up, so heading wasn’t really part of my game,” Metayer shared. “But the service was great, and I was able to get my head on things.”
Her former coach at Cal, Neil McGuire, praised her evolution. “She’s got incredible soccer intellect… Athletically she’s extremely fit. She can deal with pressure… she just has a lot of strengths that make her right for the professional game,” he stated.
Metayer’s performance this season has been impressive, participating in 20 regular-season matches and making 11 starts. Her resilience was tested earlier this year when she suffered a knee injury during preseason. “Nothing’s ever guaranteed,” she said, reflecting on her recovery. “I had to claw my way back.”
Returning to the pitch, Metayer played in the playoffs, and her contributions were vital in the quarterfinals against Racing Louisville, which was decided by penalties. Now, she stands on the brink of history, eager to lead her team to victory in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
As an added emotional boost, the Cal women’s soccer alumni network is organizing a tailgate for the championship match, ensuring that many familiar faces will be in attendance.
Metayer expressed her excitement about playing in the Bay Area again, especially after experiencing the overwhelming support for women’s sports during the Spirit’s earlier game at Oracle Park, where 40,000 fans gathered. “To play the final here is special,” she remarked.
The stage is set for an unforgettable clash as the Washington Spirit face off against Gotham FC. Fans and supporters eagerly await what promises to be a historic night in women’s soccer.
