CHP Urges Drivers to Stay Safe as 82 Million Travel for Holidays
URGENT UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is urging drivers to prioritize safety as 82 million Americans prepare to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. With heavy traffic and hazardous weather conditions expected, officials are highlighting crucial safety tips for travelers.
As of Friday night, the National Weather Service Hanford has issued a Dense Fog Advisory starting at midnight Saturday, warning that visibility could drop to as low as 200 feet in the Central Valley. This severe weather could significantly affect travel plans, leading to potential gridlock on highways.
CHP Officer Anthony Daulton emphasizes the importance of using low beams in foggy conditions to improve visibility. “Always turn on your headlights—low beams. Do not use high beams when you’re in the fog because that actually makes your visibility worse,” he stated.
In preparation for the holiday rush, the CHP is kicking off its holiday enforcement period from Thanksgiving Eve through Sunday. With millions on the road, it’s critical for drivers to ensure their vehicles are in safe working order.
Local mechanic Brandy Ames from Sunnyside Auto Repair warns that neglecting car maintenance can lead to major issues during travel. “The most important thing anybody can do is get your car to a trusted auto shop every 5,000 miles. For most of us, that’s twice a year,” Ames advised. Key checks include the engine, brakes, and crucial fluid levels like coolant and oil to prevent overheating—potentially catastrophic for vehicles.
The CHP is prepared to assist motorists in need. “If you’re on the highway and you dial 9-1-1, it will go to the CHP dispatch,” Officer Daulton confirmed.
As millions hit the road, officials urge everyone to stay calm and safe. “Say a prayer, hit the road, drive safe, don’t rush,” Ames encouraged. With these measures, travelers can help ensure a safer journey this Thanksgiving.
