Cooper Flagg Shines with Career-High 29 Points in Mavs Win
UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, Cooper Flagg led the Dallas Mavericks to a dramatic 118-115 comeback victory against the New Orleans Pelicans on July 15, 2023, at the American Airlines Center. Flagg delivered a career-high 29 points, including a clutch performance in the fourth quarter, solidifying his status as a rising NBA star.
Flagg’s impressive display came just two weeks after a disappointing encounter against his former high school teammate, Derik Queen, where he missed a potential tying shot in the final seconds. This time, Flagg turned the tide, scoring 12 of his 29 points in the crucial final quarter, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
The game took a dramatic turn with less than a minute remaining. After a layup from Queen put the Pelicans ahead, Flagg responded decisively, contributing to five of the Mavericks’ last eight possessions. His pivotal assist to Naji Marshall gave Dallas the lead for good with just 32 seconds on the clock.
Queen, who also had a standout performance with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and a career-high 11 assists, was unable to capitalize on a last-second 3-pointer that could have tied the game. “I [saw] him laugh at me,” Queen remarked postgame, reflecting on the intensity of their match-up. “That’s probably what he was laughing at, but yo, that’s crazy. Full circle.”
Flagg’s recent performances have positioned him as a formidable force in the league, particularly in clutch situations. He ranks sixth overall with 31 points in the final five minutes of games this season. Mavs coach Jason Kidd praised Flagg’s composure, stating, “Clutch [situations], he’s not afraid. He seems like he’s been there before.”
Despite the Mavericks’ overall struggles this season, currently with a 5-12 record, Flagg’s relentless energy and adaptability have been a beacon of hope. After trailing by as much as 15 points during the game, Flagg took Kidd’s challenge to heart, attacking the paint aggressively in the second half and finishing with 20 points in the paint. This achievement makes him the second-youngest player in NBA history to accomplish such a feat, just behind LeBron James.
“I was settling too much, settling for jump shots,” Flagg admitted. “You got to put more pressure on the defense.” His adjustment in strategy paid off, as he shot an impressive 8-of-9 in the second half, a testament to his evolving play style.
Flagg’s performance has not only garnered attention for his scoring ability but also for his overall contribution to the Mavericks’ gameplay. He finished the night with 7 rebounds and 5 assists, further solidifying his role as a key player. “He’s blossoming into who we all know he is,” said teammate P.J. Washington, who contributed 24 points and 9 rebounds to the win.
As the Mavericks look to build on this victory, all eyes will be on Flagg as he continues to develop and impact the game. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this young talent will evolve throughout the season. The Mavericks’ next game will be crucial as they aim to gain momentum following this exhilarating victory.
Stay tuned for more updates on Flagg and the Mavericks as they navigate this season’s challenges.
