An Indian fighter jet crashed during a demonstration flight at the Dubai Air Show on November 17, 2023, resulting in the death of its sole pilot. The aircraft, an Indian HAL Tejas, plummeted to the ground at Al Maktoum International Airport, creating a significant fireball and thick black smoke that rose into the sky. Emergency services, including police vehicles and ambulances, quickly responded, deploying firefighting foam to control the blaze.

Eyewitnesses, including families who had gathered to watch the air show, expressed shock and disbelief as the incident unfolded. The jet appeared to lose control just before the crash, according to reports. The Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed the tragic accident, stating that “the pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident.” In a statement, the IAF expressed deep regret over the loss of life and extended condolences to the bereaved family. A court of inquiry has been established to investigate the cause of the crash, with Emirati authorities also conducting their own investigation.

Emergency Response and Continuing Air Show

The Dubai Media Office reported that firefighting and emergency teams were on-site, effectively managing the situation. An SUV with diplomatic plates, displaying the Indian flag, was observed at the crash scene, highlighting the incident’s significance. Remarkably, the air show resumed flight demonstrations approximately 90 minutes after the accident, with the Russian Knights performing overhead while emergency crews continued to work at the crash site.

The HAL Tejas is India’s indigenous lightweight, single-engine fighter aircraft, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It is intended to enhance India’s fighter fleet, particularly in light of growing military tensions in South Asia. In September 2023, India’s Defense Ministry finalized a contract to procure 97 Tejas jets for the air force, with deliveries slated to start in 2027. An earlier agreement in 2021 for 83 Tejas aircraft faced delays primarily due to shortages of necessary engines sourced from the United States.

Clarifications and Technical Reliability

Prior to the crash, the Indian Press Information Bureau had addressed social media claims alleging that a Tejas aircraft had experienced an oil leak during the air show. The bureau dismissed these claims as “false” and asserted they were attempts to undermine the aircraft’s reliability. The military explained that videos circulating online depicted the routine, intentional draining of condensation, a standard procedure for aircraft operating in humid conditions like those prevalent in Dubai.

Dubai has experienced high humidity and fog recently as seasonal changes occur. Notably, a Tejas fighter jet had crashed in Rajasthan, India, the previous year, but the pilot successfully ejected and survived that incident. The ongoing investigations into the current crash aim to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
