Rocklin Claims First CIF NorCal Open Volleyball Title, Shocking Mitty
UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, Rocklin has captured its first CIF NorCal Open Division volleyball title, defeating Archbishop Mitty on November 18, 2025, at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. Former Mitty coach Bret Almazan-Cezar led Rocklin to a dramatic comeback victory, securing the championship with a final score of 25-21, 16-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-10.
This victory is monumental, marking the first CIF NorCal Open title in Rocklin’s history. The Thunder (37-4) were down two sets to one but rallied to win the fourth set and then clinched the fifth set decisively. Almazan-Cezar’s return to his former team’s home court proved both nostalgic and triumphant, as he left with a title he had previously secured multiple times as the Monarchs’ head coach.
Mitty (33-4), who entered the match as the No. 7 team nationally and boasted an undefeated streak in sets for over a month, struggled against Rocklin’s aggressive start. The Monarchs fell behind early, losing the first set 25-21, and although they regained momentum with two straight victories, Rocklin’s resilience turned the tide.
“Their physical play and preparation were impressive,” said Mitty’s first-year coach Jake Spain. “Playing from behind against a skilled team like Rocklin was challenging.”
Rocklin capitalized on their early lead in the fourth set, taking a commanding 3-0 start and maintaining their advantage. The Thunder’s middle blocker Rylee Heinz sealed the match with a crucial kill, ending what had been a remarkable season for Mitty, which aimed to reverse its past losses in CIF Open state championship games.
“It was crucial for my players to know that Mitty had never lost a NorCal championship match in this gym,” Almazan-Cezar remarked, reflecting on the significance of the win.
Despite the heart-wrenching defeat, Spain expressed pride in his team’s efforts throughout the season. “It’s heartbreaking. I love these seniors, and it hurts when you come up short,” he said, emphasizing the program’s commitment to success moving forward.
Rocklin’s victory and the emotional stakes of this championship make it a story of perseverance and triumph, resonating beyond the court. The match showcased the competitive spirit of high school volleyball and the enduring legacy of coaches like Almazan-Cezar, whose impact continues to shape the sport.
As fans and players reflect on this thrilling championship, all eyes will be on how both teams prepare for future seasons. With key players like Makenna Crosson, who finished with a game-high 25 kills, and Chayse Courtney, a rising sophomore star with 22 kills, both teams have bright prospects ahead.
