Kentucky Coach Mark Pope Blasts Team After 83-66 Loss to Michigan State

UPDATE: Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope delivered a scathing assessment of his team after their 83-66 defeat against the Michigan State Spartans in the Champions Classic on November 14, 2023. Pope lamented that his “message isn’t resonating” with players and labeled the Wildcats as “really poorly coached.”

Kentucky struggled significantly during the game, trailing by as many as 24 points late in the second half. When asked if these injuries were an excuse for the team’s inconsistencies, Pope remained resolute. “Your identity is about a collective group… It shouldn’t matter if we had built a great organization,” he insisted.

The game took a disappointing turn for Kentucky after they initially led 17-14 on a dunk by Mouhamed Dioubate. However, Michigan State responded with a staggering 30-10 run to close the first half, leaving Kentucky with just 27 points at halftime—their second-lowest scoring half under Pope.

Despite a brief rally in the second half, where Kentucky cut the lead to ten twice, Michigan State quickly extinguished any hope with a decisive 13-1 run. The mood in the Kentucky locker room starkly contrasted with Michigan State’s, who improved to a perfect 4-0 this season, including a notable victory over Arkansas.

Michigan State’s Jaxon Kohler led the charge with 20 points, while Jeremy Fears made history with 13 assists, the highest against an AP-ranked team since Mateen Cleaves in 1999. Coach Tom Izzo praised Fears’ performance, stating, “After that first timeout, I thought he was spectacular.”

Michigan State dominated the boards, out-rebounding Kentucky 42-28 and showcasing their depth and development, as four of five starters had experience from the previous season. Izzo highlighted the importance of player retention and development, stating, “I don’t give up on the people I got. That’s what we call development.”
