Amazon Web Services Partners with DP World Tour for AI Integration
The DP World Tour has officially partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to become its Official Cloud Provider. This collaboration aims to transform the golf tour through advanced artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, enhancing the experiences of players, fans, and media alike. With this strategic alliance, AWS will leverage its AI infrastructure to integrate real-time data and historical context, fundamentally changing how golf is experienced globally.
Innovative Solutions for Fans and Players
AWS will implement its Media Services to deliver live video and on-demand content to fans, enabling them to access fast-round compilations of selected players. New experiences will emerge, driven by generative AI, which will provide data-driven insights and shot commentary. These features will include instantaneous language translation, ensuring that fans worldwide can engage with the sport in their preferred language.
Nina Walsh, global leader for media, entertainment, games, and sports at AWS, emphasized the complexity of developing an AI system tailored to golf’s intricacies. She stated, “Imagine following a crucial shot on your mobile device and instantly understanding not just the distance, but the historical success rate, the impact of the wind, or how the player performs under pressure, all narrated in your preferred language. That’s the experience we want to deliver to every golf fan worldwide.”
The partnership will also enhance the DP World Tour’s extensive content library through an AI-powered media asset management system. This system will automatically tag metadata, transforming the vast content ecosystem into an intelligent, searchable archive that quickly identifies players, shots, and key moments. This will allow fans to easily access content about their favorite players, promoting a more personalized viewing experience.
Enhanced Operational Efficiency and Sustainability
For on-site spectators, AWS will develop a second generation of the Tour’s “Virtual Twin” product. This technology creates a digital replica of each golf course, processing over one million data points per tournament. It combines historical data, current conditions, and predictive analytics to offer a comprehensive view of each hole. This information will be available on screens throughout the venue and on mobile devices, allowing fans to engage with the action regardless of their location on the course.
The partnership also aims to streamline operations for the DP World Tour’s teams. A new intelligence platform will analyze vast data sources in real time, aiding operational decisions such as optimizing marshal deployments and managing food and merchandise concessions. With solutions like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon QuickSuite, the Tour will gain insights to make informed, data-driven decisions.
The DP World Tour’s vision of ‘Tournament-As-A-Service’ is set to take significant strides by 2026, with tournament applications and data now integrated into AWS. This integration will provide greater scalability and flexibility, allowing for a more consistent and data-rich experience across various tournaments.
Michael Cole, Chief Technology Officer of the DP World Tour, highlighted the complexities of coordinating golf tournaments. He noted, “A golf tournament is one of the most complex events to deliver in professional sport. Instead of a single stadium, we are building a smart city every week, often in remote locations.” By hosting tournament services on AWS, the Tour aims to deliver connected and intelligent experiences consistently, regardless of the location.
In support of sustainability efforts, AWS will power a new platform called Green Drive Live, which will monitor energy usage, emissions, waste, and logistics in real time. This platform will utilize machine learning to predict and enhance future environmental performance by simulating operational scenarios ahead of events. A live emissions dashboard will also be integrated into the tournament app, providing real-time metrics for fans and officials.
Since 2024, the DP World Tour has been working to increase remote television broadcasts, which has reduced the carbon footprint of each tournament by approximately 87 tonnes. AWS’s cloud production services will further expand the scale of remote production, aligning with the Tour’s commitment to becoming net zero carbon by 2040.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for both the DP World Tour and AWS, promising to revolutionize the sport of golf through innovative technology and a commitment to sustainability.
