German Bundestag Sets New Record for Longest Plenary Session
Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, achieved a historic milestone by breaking its own record for the longest sitting during the current legislative period. The session commenced at 9 am on Thursday and stretched until 1:42 am on Friday, as vice president Omid Nouripour officially closed the meeting. This new record surpasses the previous one, which ended at 12:29 am in June.
The extended duration of Thursday’s session was largely due to an interruption initiated by the far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD). Around midnight, AfD representatives raised questions regarding whether the parliament still maintained a quorum. For the Bundestag to be deemed quorate, more than half of its 630 members must be present. Following a roll-call vote on the Veterinary Medicinal Products Act, the required minimum was confirmed, but the disruption delayed the conclusion of the session.
This marathon meeting reflects the ongoing challenges and dynamics within German politics, particularly as various parties engage in vigorous debates on key legislation. The record-setting session highlights the Bundestag’s commitment to addressing pressing issues, even at the cost of extended hours.
With parliamentary sessions often extending into the night, this recent event raises questions about the capacity for lawmakers to maintain focus and productivity during such lengthy discussions. As Germany continues to navigate complex legislative matters, the endurance displayed in the Bundestag serves as a testament to the dedication of its members to their responsibilities.
