Tampa Bay Rays Confirm Return to Tropicana Field in 2026
BREAKING: The Tampa Bay Rays have officially announced their return to an upgraded Tropicana Field for the 2026 season, following extensive repairs caused by Hurricane Milton in October 2024. The team will begin the season playing at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, but fans can look forward to the home opener on April 6, 2026, against the Chicago Cubs.
In a statement, team CEO Ken Babby expressed excitement about reuniting with fans and local businesses in downtown St. Petersburg. “We are excited to return home to Tropicana Field in April and to once again join our fans and neighboring businesses in downtown St. Petersburg in celebrating the return of Rays baseball,” Babby said.
Ongoing repairs include the roof and several internal areas damaged during the hurricane, which severely tore apart the stadium’s iconic structure. The renovations are set to enhance the fan experience, featuring an expanded main videoboard, new video displays, and a state-of-the-art sound system.
The Rays will also unveil new ticket options starting Thursday, aiming to boost attendance after facing challenges at the Trop. Despite a 41-40 record at Steinbrenner Field, the team sold out 61 of their 81 games, attracting 786,750 fans during the season.
While the team celebrated some success on the field, including two World Series appearances, attendance issues have plagued the franchise at Tropicana Field. The 2024 season ended with a disappointing 77-85 record, missing the playoffs yet again. In a significant move, the Rays have also released infielder Bob Seymour to pursue a playing opportunity in Asia.
As the team looks ahead, they are also planning events to honor former Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, who will be inducted into the team hall of fame, adding a layer of emotional connection for long-time fans.
With ongoing discussions about a new ballpark projected for 2029, the Rays are working towards building a brighter future in Tampa Bay. The commitment to return to Tropicana Field showcases their dedication to the loyal fanbase that has supported them through thick and thin.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Rays prepare for this exciting transition back to their home field!
