Single Mother’s Milan Trip Strengthens Father-Daughter Bond
A recent trip to Milan proved transformative for Barbara Pazur and her family, as it enhanced the relationship between her daughter and her ex-husband. After years of co-parenting challenges, Pazur’s three-day getaway allowed her daughter to connect more deeply with her father, paving the way for a stronger bond.
Barbara Pazur, a single mother for over five years, faced a unique dilemma. She separated from her daughter’s father when their child was just six months old. Despite having joint custody, her daughter was reluctant to spend the night at her father’s home, only seeing him during weekly daytime visits. This dependency concerned Pazur, who felt it was crucial for her daughter to develop a relationship with her father.
Life as a dedicated single parent had left little room for Pazur to focus on her own needs. Occasional nights away at her mother’s house allowed her some respite, but these moments were often occupied with chores and personal maintenance rather than relaxation or enjoyment. Before motherhood, she had traveled extensively, visiting over 20 countries, and longed to recapture that sense of adventure.
The idea of a trip resurfaced when a friend suggested a three-day getaway. Initially hesitant, Pazur reconsidered after her mother assured her that she could manage with support from her ex-husband. They planned a summer trip to Milan, excitedly booking their arrangements months in advance.
Just two weeks prior to the departure, tragedy struck. Pazur’s mother suffered a serious injury, breaking her ribs in a biking accident. Faced with the prospect of canceling her long-anticipated trip, Pazur contemplated her options. Ultimately, she chose to prioritize her own well-being, recognizing that she would be leaving her daughter in the care of her father, not a stranger.
“I explained to him that she is his daughter too,” Pazur recalled. “If he wants to take her on solo vacations in the future, she needs to get used to spending more time with him.” After a brief pause, her ex-husband agreed to the arrangement. This moment marked a turning point for Pazur, who felt a mix of joy and empowerment.
The day of the trip arrived, and while saying goodbye, Pazur reassured her daughter, “I will miss you too, but Mommy needs to recharge so I can be a better mom.” They agreed to communicate daily via FaceTime and maintain familiar routines, including bedtime rituals and limited screen time.
During her time in Milan, Pazur fully embraced the experience. The trip allowed her to disconnect from the responsibilities of motherhood and indulge in leisure activities like sightseeing, enjoying fine dining, and exploring the vibrant culture of the city.
Upon returning, she was eager to reconnect with her daughter. To her surprise, the young girl expressed excitement about her time with her father. “We had so much fun, and Daddy made disco for me every night before bedtime,” her daughter shared, indicating that the overnight stays were no longer a source of anxiety for her.
This breakthrough was significant for both the child and her father. Their relationship strengthened, and Pazur found relief in knowing that her daughter was adapting well. “I was selfishly happy because it meant that I could now have one full day and night of the week just for myself,” she reflected.
Months later, the dynamic between her daughter and her father continues to improve. The young girl now occasionally stays overnight at his home without hesitation. Their bond has grown stronger, allowing Pazur the freedom to travel, rest, and reclaim her identity beyond motherhood.
Through this experience, Pazur has learned that prioritizing her own needs not only benefits her but also enhances her parenting. Recognizing that self-care is essential, she has become a more balanced and present mother.
Her journey highlights the importance of shared parenting and the positive outcomes that can arise from taking time for oneself.
