Celebrate 162 Years of Star of India at San Diego Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum of San Diego invites the public to celebrate the 162nd birthday of the historic ship, Star of India, with a special open house event on November 14, 2025. Known as the world’s oldest active sailing ship, Star of India will be accessible to visitors for free dockside entry from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on that day.
This complimentary open house is available exclusively for walk-up guests. The Maritime Museum encourages donations, which support the ongoing preservation of its historic vessels. Visitors also have the option to upgrade to a general admission ticket, allowing access to the entire fleet and various exhibits, including galleries located below deck that are typically unseen from the Embarcadero.
The Star of India, originally named Euterpe, was constructed in 1863 and has successfully circumnavigated the globe twenty-one times. It first arrived in San Diego in 1927, becoming a cherished part of the local maritime heritage. After years of restoration efforts that began in 1951, the ship has been maintained by dedicated volunteers and staff at the Maritime Museum.
During the celebration on November 14, museum volunteers will serve complimentary birthday cake starting at 12 noon, while supplies last. This festive occasion not only honors the ship’s remarkable history but also highlights the museum’s commitment to preserving maritime culture for future generations.
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is recognized as one of the nation’s top attractions. It offers a variety of experiences, including self-guided tours and group tours led by docents. General admission tickets are priced at $28 for adults, $20 for seniors and military personnel, and $15 for youth aged 6 to 17. Children aged five and under can enter free of charge. Tickets can be purchased online or at the museum’s ticket booth located at Star of India Wharf, 1492 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101-3309.
The Maritime Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last guest entry at 4 p.m.. This celebration serves as an opportunity for both San Diegans and visitors to engage with a vital piece of history, while also supporting the museum’s mission to preserve maritime heritage.
