Thanksgiving Turkey Buying Guide: Experts Urge Timely Decisions
UPDATE: As Thanksgiving approaches on November 23, 2023, experts are urging consumers to plan ahead for their turkey purchases. With the holiday just weeks away, the question on everyone’s mind is: When is the right time to buy your turkey?
Food safety experts from the Minnesota Department of Health have confirmed that the timing of your turkey purchase is crucial. For those opting for a fresh turkey, it’s advisable to wait until just one to two days before Thanksgiving to buy your bird. During this time, keep it refrigerated on a tray or pan to prevent juices from contaminating other foods.
However, if you prefer a frozen turkey, the advice is quite different. According to the health department, there’s virtually no wrong time to buy a frozen turkey, provided you allow adequate time for thawing. A frozen turkey can remain in the freezer “indefinitely,” though it’s best to consume it within a year. This means savvy shoppers could even purchase a turkey after Thanksgiving and store it for next year!
As the countdown to Thanksgiving continues, it’s important to note how to safely thaw your turkey. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) emphasizes that there are three safe methods: in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave. Avoid thawing your turkey on the counter for more than two hours, as this can elevate the meat into the “Danger Zone” of temperatures between 40°F and 140°F, where bacteria thrive.
For those concerned about timing, the FSIS has provided reassurance. In the event that you forget to thaw your turkey, it can still be cooked from frozen—just expect it to take at least 50% longer than a thawed turkey.
In addition to turkey purchasing tips, many may be looking for alternative dining options. Some restaurant chains have announced they will remain open on Thanksgiving, providing convenient solutions for those who prefer not to cook.
As consumers dive into their Thanksgiving preparations, remember: planning is key. Experts stress that knowing when to buy and how to store your turkey can make all the difference for a successful holiday feast. Share this information with friends and family to ensure everyone is ready for the upcoming celebrations!
