A migrant vessel sank near the border of Thailand and Malaysia on March 10, 2024, with hundreds of individuals reported missing. According to the Malaysian Maritime Authority, ten survivors and one deceased person were recovered from the waters off Langkawi. First Admiral Romli Mustafa confirmed that the vessel had departed from Buthidaung, Myanmar, carrying approximately 300 people when it capsized.

The search and rescue operation is ongoing, as officials believe more victims may still be at sea. Among the survivors are three Myanmar men, two Rohingya men, and one Bangladeshi man. The body discovered was identified as that of a Rohingya woman, as reported by state media outlet Bernama, citing Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah.

The migrants were initially aboard a larger vessel but were instructed to transfer to three smaller boats as they approached the border to evade detection by authorities. Each of these smaller boats reportedly held about 100 individuals. The status of the other two boats remains unknown.

The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group, have faced significant persecution in Myanmar, where they are often viewed as foreign interlopers. This has led many to flee their homeland in search of safety and a better life. The plight of the Rohingya has drawn international attention and concern over their treatment and the dangerous journeys they undertake.

The Malaysian Maritime Authority is actively coordinating efforts to locate additional survivors and recover any remaining victims. As the situation unfolds, the international community continues to monitor developments regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by the Rohingya and other migrants in the region.
