Woman Swept Off Feet by Monster Wave During Bay Area King Tides
URGENT UPDATE: A woman was violently knocked off her feet by a massive wave at the Pacifica Municipal Pier on Thursday, January 25, 2023, as the Bay Area faced hazardous king tides and towering surf. Shocking video footage sent in by a KRON4 viewer captures the terrifying moment as 14 to 25-foot waves battered the coastline.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a stark warning for beachgoers, urging them to stay clear of jetties, piers, and waterside structures from Thursday through Saturday morning due to the dangerous conditions. With king tides in full effect, the risk of encountering sneaker waves has significantly increased. These unpredictable waves can surge much higher up the beach than anticipated, potentially overwhelming unsuspecting individuals.
The exact nature of the wave that struck the woman remains uncertain, but the NWS strongly advises that people should never turn their backs on the ocean. In their official warning, the NWS describes sneaker waves as “potentially deadly” and notes that they can occur at any time without warning.
Authorities have cautioned that the powerful waves can carry a dangerous mix of sand, water, and debris, which can become overwhelmingly heavy. Survivors of sneaker wave incidents have reported feeling as if they were encased in concrete, making it nearly impossible to escape the pull of the receding tide. The NWS emphasizes the risk of being caught under heavy logs and debris that can be lifted or rolled by sneaker wave action.
In light of these alarming conditions, officials continue to stress the importance of safety at the beach. Beachgoers are urged to stay well clear of large logs and debris fields located near the surf line or below high-water marks.
As the king tides persist, the situation remains critical. Authorities are on high alert, and the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while enjoying the coastline.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
